Paradisos

Journal Entry: Fri Feb 28, 2014, 4:17 PM

Not been around much. Time seems to contract as in a relativistic abnormality. Writing, translating, thinking and taking not as many photographs as I'd wish.

But in September I was able to finally go through with a long-cherished project: a series of mostly nude photos in Paradiso, the city's best known and tremendously classical bookstore, with one of the great models we have in Spain today, Dana Moreno. Breakneck photoshoot: three hours, that's all the bookstore could give us 9 PM-Midnight.

So we will be opening a show of some 20 photos from the project on Friday in Gijón.

To launch things, one of the photos from the project got an award today in a local contest.

Which probably means I'm back.

Time is the cruel artisan of love.

This photo I took and uploaded yesterday of Rut has gone to 83 faves and 3,431 views in less than 14 hours, becoming my fourth most-faved photo. This is more than half the views received through many _years_ by my most viewed and faved photo, also musically themed:

It's All Music to my Eyes by nocturno

I would like to know what happened or what is the reason for this reaction. The photo is well within one of my usual styles, it's not a breakthrough or an experiment, so this is most surprising, especially since views and faves continue (so it's not only the reaction to appearing on the front page for a few seconds).

BTW: I met Rut when she was singing in the streeet. She's not exactly a street performer, she works cafes and larger venues and is developing her own songwriting, but she also acts in the street when necessary to make ends meet. She's a sweet person, with a very good, resonant mezzo voice.

Journal Entry: Fri Apr 30, 2010, 6:49 PM

Why?

I have now 529 followers.

Unlike other people, I have no idea what this means. I don't become impressed easily with quantity. Having 100 followers who couldn't care less or who follow me just because I follow them is meaningless. I'd rather have two people following me who actually care about the kind of images I produce.

Also, I've been having ups and downs, months on end without photographing, and suddenly a burst of excited, furious work with new models, new ideas, new lighting concepts.

I'm the kind of guy who needs feedback. So I ask you why do you follow me?

Yes, there are a few obvious people. The kind of guys who don't create but have accounts to hoard nude pics. I know they don't get it, I'm not interewsted. Besides them, I'd like to know your motives: good looking models?, interesting concepts? technical points? emotion and sensation? Why.

Thanks for sharing.

A random selection of photos that I strongly enjoy, from my latest faves, among them, some recent work by several or my most favorite people in DA.

Long overdue. My project "De tiempo y lugar", which was finished almost 2 years ago, and which is published in English and Spanish will finally be shown in a public exhibit in Gijón, Asturias, Northern Spain. At least some 15 of the 35 photo series will be there.

If you make it there on Thursday March 4, the beer is on me.

The show will be hanging there until the 31st. With luck, the photog will also hang in there for a long time to come

Te invito a ser parte de un proyecto

ENGLISH

Six people have already confirmed. I'd like to have at least an additional 14... or more.

I would like to have your collaboration as photographer (or model with a photog) in a project I’m working on. Basically, I would like to have around 30 photos of you people in a traditional café of your area (not these newfangled designer artificial coffeeshops, no Starbucks at all, but old-fashioned, warm cafés such as the one you can see here: www.facebook.com/album.php?aid… where I’ll be shooting most of the photos for the project. I need women, men, old, young, hetero or homosexual couples, whatever. You must be doing something, not posing, individually or in couples or groups (reading, smoking, playing cards or chess or whatever, writing, chatting, embracing, etc.). No advertising should be obvious (including brands of drinks in bottles and glasses, cigarette packs, etc.)

These photos will go in a video for a well-known French singer-songwriter. It’s a project along the lines of my previous one, “Nada de ella” which you can see here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=S4s1j6… and the photos I want from Deviants would go all together in a musical bridge interpreted by a Medieval hurdy-gurdy. Photos must be in color but they might be processed for sepia, I’m not sure yet. It can be a new production or a photo you already have, no matter, as long as the photog and all people appearing can sign a release. Delivery size is 1800x1200 pixels and the format MUST be LANDSCAPE for the video, and I’d like to have the photos by mid-April at the most.

There’s no money for anyone involved (beginning with me, of course), but there will be credits for all photographers and models who participate. The video will be shown in my sites, in YouTube and in the author’s French website.

Please let me know in a note if you want to participate, describing your photo. I will comment and send you all the relevant data, the necessary releases and all the detailed information which I can’t put up here just now.

Hiatus and Kat and Carla

Work caught up with me... again.

I apologize for not updating the journal nor setting up the much-announced contest, but I just have to wear too many hats: translator, newspaper contributor, radio presenter, devoted blogger, public speaker, photographer, husband, father... I'm actually thankful that I'm such an antisocial being I have very few friends, and most of them thousands of miles away from where I sit, some even in DA.

But I still find time to shoot, especially when I have a chance such as the one I enjoyed these days, having the amazing and sweet Kat Love :iconkatlove: visiting town, staying at our house and modeling. I enlisted lovely petite Carla García to aprtner with Kat in a somewhat adventurous series of photos contrasting their wildly different beauty and female-ness but also trying to achieve an interplay which made the viewer oblivious to the obvious differences.

I'm happy with the result, and I do hope Kat and Carla agree.

I also had the chance to go with a group of photographers to Carabanchel Jail before it was torn down. Jails are always sad places, and the work of hundreds of graffitti artists just made that sadness more poignant.

I'm going back soon to my two ongoing projects: Women-Colors and Songs, in the meantime, I'm leaving here the link to the video with the photos and music of the first song, "Nada de ella" by my pal Carlos Arellano. Please watch it!: www.youtube.com/watch?v=S4s1j6…

The "Me By Me" female selfportrait contest will be launched by surprise at some point!

Be patient, it will be worth it!

We CONTINUE to need prizes: features in journals, subscriptions, dinner invitations, diamond rings, you name it, but PLEASE help along so more and more Deviantas (female deviants) will participate.

Songs project

For almost two months I haven't updated this journal. I've been in my annual Semana Negra festival engagement, but also working hard in the non-artistic world. This made me go into total immersion with one of my projects, the photos for Carlos Arellano's song "Nada de Ella".

I got me an abandoned house, after defeating many bureaucratic obstacles, a friend loaned me an electric generator since the house has no electricity. I spent four days inside a dusty old house uninhabited for decades, with my new discovery, Dania Mayela, a natural model (it was her first time in front of a camera, check her out!)

The shoot came out great, about one thousand images in 4 days, for a song that will use perhaps 80 photos. I've processed and edited obsessively this weekend to get a preliminary version of the video for the song (yes, a video with still photos, why is that strange? Some people look at me as if I were outta here).

Anyway, check out some of the photos in my "Nada de Ella" collection: nocturno.deviantart.com/galler…

UPDATE: VIDEO IS NOW AVAILABLE

The video/slideshow for the song is now available in YouTube www.youtube.com/watch?v=S4s1j6…

If you watch it and wish to comment, you can do it there or in this journal. All comments are extremely welcome in the context of the project. In fact, I ask you to please comment (not that it ever works, but hey, this might be the first time).

In the next two weeks I'll be finishing the photos for Yampi's www.yampi.com/ "Es la Ciudad" song.

The Self-Portrait Contest was delayed. I'm sorry. Stay tuned, I will not disappear from the journal for two months again, I promise.

The "Me By Me" female selfportrait contest will be launched sometime in September!

Be patient, it will be worth it!

We COTINUE to need prizes: features in journals, subscriptions, dinner invitations, diamond rings, you name it, but PLEASE help along so more and more Deviantas (female deviants) will participate.

Colors and Songs

I'm working in two different projects which I find highly motivating. The first is a challenge for eight models to interpret the seven colors of the rainbow plus the "color" black. The first two shoots are done: red and green, and part of the photos can be found in my "Colors" collection:

nocturno.deviantart.com/galler…

All additional comments are welcome in the context of the project.

And if I'm really, really lucky, and things work out as I desire, two wonderful deviants will be working with me in this project:

The amazing :iconojosqueven:, a fine photographer and captivating model would do the black color.

The lovely :iconooodeliriumooo: would also travel over here to do a sensuous orange.

The second project began quite innocently when I used a song from a friend to set up a slideshow of my photos for a promo thing. This led to me asking the great singer-songwriter Yampi www.yampi.com/, who is a good friend, for permission to use one of the songs of his latest album and interpret it with a model/dancer. We will start shooting this next week. But then I thought about many excellent, relatively unknown musicians whose work I enjoy immensely, and I'm now in the process of selecting other songs and asking for copyright permissions to make a series, working with especially intense and interesting subjects to retell the stories of the songs from another point of view.

The Self-Portrait Contest will not be launched until early August (apologies), but I will try to get nice prizes to entice more participation.

The "Me By Me" female selfportrait contest will be launched August 1st!

Be patient, it will be worth it!

We need prizes: features in journals for a set time, subscriptions, dinner invitations, diamond rings, you name it, but help along so more and more Deviantas (female deviants) will participate.

Deviants I'd Love to Photograph

The fact that I might be working in the near future with :iconojosqueven: and :iconooodeliriumooo:, as well as other negotiations I have with other Deviants (mostly in Spain, obviously) brings to mind other Deviants I would bring here,  all expenses paid plus salary and more, so I could work with them if I ever won the lottery, some of the amazing women which I want ardently to photograph, because I believe have important things to tell to my camera. Here are 21 of them. Maybe one day I'll be lucky enough to work with them.

(Maybe some of them will travel here on their own... nah!)

:icongreenrae:

On the Radio

Being a photographer and doing radio are the most fun I can have with my clothes on.

I've been involved in radio for more than 20 years, writing scripts, doing journalism, doing my own sections in talk-radio programs, as a promoter of Spanish-spoken rock music and as the coordinator and co-anchor of our own talk-radio show, devoted to the divulgation of science, knowledge and critical thought, for which the three co-presenters received the National Journalism Award granted by the Journalists Club of Mexico in 1997. I don't mean to brag, but I'm certainly proud.

I left Mexico and came to Spain, radio was not easy to get in, so I was out of the air for almost 9 years. But now I'm back with a 40-minute segment on science and knowledge every Thursday in a program called "Radiolandia", broadcast by the radio station of the Principality of Asturias. A small station in a small part of Spain, but I don't mind, since thanks to the Internet I can reach anyone who would care to listen.

Of course, the broadcasts are in Spanish, they can be listened live 11:40-12:30 (European Standard Time) on Thursdays at rtpa.stream.flumotion.com/rtpa… or you can just listen to the previous programs and even download them at www.rinconprohibido.com , it will be nice to have people in DA as my listeners.

The "Me By Me" female selfportrait contest is coming!

I'll be launching the female self-portrait contest in earnest the first two weeks in June. Be forewarned that all entries must be uploaded to DA after June 1st so if you have a photo that you wish to enter the contest, hold it until then

Secondly: We need prizes. I will be offering prints of my photos and the featuring in this journal, but we need more motivational prizes: featuring in journals for a set time, subscriptions, dinner invitations, you name it, but help along so more and more Deviantas will feel moved to participate with their images. Please note me or comment what you can do to promote creative and original self-portraits. Suggestions also welcome.

Latest selfpics in my fave list.

So to warm up our motors for the contest... here are a few of my more recent faved self-portraits. I repeat my previous comments on selfpics: "What I really care about is looking at images where women tell me their stories, where they say 'this is how I am, this is who I am, this is how I see myself, this is the person I want  you to see'" because it teaches me new and wondrous ways to look at women and photograph them.

New Project

As Janis Joplin aptly stated, "time keeps moving on, friends, they turn away". So the editor for my previous book (nocturno.deviantart.com/galler…) weaseled his way out of the deal and when we accidentally met, gave me a sickening half hour of pretexts, cop-outs, alibis and uncalled-for explanations. And he spits when he talks, which is unsufferable and gross. So I have put out my personal edition (not as high-quality as I'd like, but a good price-quality compromise) of the "Of time and place" book in English and Spanish, and "Abstractoreo" in Spanish. Maybe someday they'll find a worthy editor, but I won't sit down and cry while it happens. I have things to do, photos to take, beauty to find and preserve in pixels.

So now I'm on a new project related to women and colors, which I began with my last shoot with Janet and which may take up a nice part of my upcoming months besides other kinds of photos. Seven totally different models, from girls to adults, from sweet to sexy, different kinds of beauty and emotion in seven colors. Or at least I hope so.

The idea is not to play with any preconcieved stereotype of colors, (red-passion, green-environment, I hate that stuff), rather asking each model to interpret her color, to be herself in yellow of violet, to hide behind masks or props and show whatever they choose, to feel and express emotion as strongly as possible.

Wish me luck. Seriously.

Contests, Past and Upcoming

The first contest I ran was, I guess, moderately successful. I'll accept any ideas on how to have more entries and more voters in an upcoming contest I have in the oven. As a photographer working with female models, I've found that women and girls who take self-portraits are a wonderful way to see women under a different light. Let's admit it: I'm a guy, all guys are the same, and probably we're all pigs (some of us try to be tender, understanding and loveable pigs, but that's about it) and I see women as a guy might. Photographically, aesthetically and spiritually, women photographers in general but especially women who do selfpics, teach me a lot. My idea is to set up a contest to cerlebrate and thank self-portraiters in DA, and may the term "camera whore" go into politically-incorrect hell sooner better than later.

So I'm calling for ideas to get more participation, prize donations and any suggestion that might help for the upcoming female selfportraits contest I might launch in a few weeks.

Latest SelfPics I've Faved.

To start with the new theme, here are a few of the latest selfpics I've faved. Sometimes they are photographically relevant, sometimes they are technically lacking, sometimes the subject is beautiful as in catwalk model, other times she's beautiful in many other ways, sometimes they are profoundly sensuous or not. What I really care about is looking at images where women tell me their stories, where they say "this is how I am, this is who I am, this is how I see myself, this is the person I want  you to see".

(It's clear why I find DA such an important part of my artistic life.)

I realize that 1st and 3rd place are by the same deviant, but nothing in the rules prevented it, so that's that. The voice of the people is not to be argued against.  It is said the people have a tendency to be rude and riotous when you contradict them, and that responsibility shall not fall upon my shoulders.

The subscriptions have gone out, and the prints have been ordered.

Thanks to cfosgate, thanks to the contestants, thanks to the voters and this has been so unbelievably strange that I might just come up with another contest based on my personal likes on the amazing subject of women, beauty, expressiveness and emotion.

Which is in the end what it's all about.

When I ask to photograph someone, it is because I love the way they look and I think I make that clear. I'm paying them a tremendous compliment. What I'm saying is, I want to take you home with me and look at you for the rest of my life.

As Janis sang, "Time keeps movin' on" and the contest ends today. But you can still vote, remember voters are sexier, happier and get laid at least SEVERAL TIMES MORE than non-voters.

Is this your last chance? Yes, both to vote and to be sexier. Few contests offer this!

Voting ends at midnight GMT. Make your vote count, vote now for the best photo of alady in eyewear.

Vote for the ONE photo that you consider the best photographically, aesthetically and creatively and Send Me A Note indicating its NUMBER, not its name, not its author (several people sent in more than one entry), but THE NUMBER by which it is identified in the list below, with the 31 entries.

CONTEST
Bespectacled Beauty Closing Soon

Tomorrow MONDAY midnight GMT time  the time to send your entries and prove that spectacles are cool and inspiring.

Rules are pretty simple, and I've left out the obvious, such as that I will gladly throw out any sexist, racist, insulting or hatemongering entry, etc.:

1. The subject of the photograph must be a female model wearing eyeglasses, not sunshades. It's not necessary for the photographer to wear glasses unless she's the model also. No obvious or excessive manipulations, we're judging photography. It has to be a new photo, meaning it must be uploaded no earlier than February 25. If we don't get at least 15 entries, the contest is void and we all will feel sad and downtrodden, don't let this happen.

2. The criteria will be the usual in photography: exposure, sharpness, composition, passion, emotion, creativity, creativity and expresiveness, expresiveness, expresiveness. This means that I'd love to have more than the expected, usual photo, but rather an original and daring approach to the subject of bespectacled beauty and emotion, Ok?

3. Deviant's votes will decide the contest. In case of a tie, I'll have the deciding vote, power is cool.

4. There will be three places. Fisrt place: a three-month subscription donated by cfosgate and a 20x30 inch print of any of my photos. Second place: a three-month subscription donated by cfosgate and a 16x24 inch print of any of my photos. Third place: a three-month subscription donated by cfosgate and a 10x15 inch print of any of my photos. Additional prize donations from other deviants very welcome.

5. The contest is open as of now and we will receive entries until March 31st. To enter, send me a note with the title "Glasses" and the deviation link. I will be linking the contestants in this journal on March 31st. Voting will be massive (hah) and popular and will happen from April 1st until April 15. You can enter as many photos as you wish.

Girls who wear glasses II

Surgery & Scars

On February 12 I underwent a rather simple surgical procedure to repair an old hernia. The hernia wasn't even too much of a nuisance, I even served as a volunteer in mountain rescue in Mexico many years ago with the hernia in place. Doctors didn't dare to operate me since I was a 3-packs-a-day smoker, which in the end was fortunate, since in the meantime another, simpler, more effective and less painful procedure was developed, the one I underwent, and I quit smoking finally a year back. I think I did it because I didn't want to wear the special girdle neede to keep my insides in place.

"Less painful" probably means that the previous procedure equated a month in the cellars of the Inquisition torturers, since I've undergone excruciating pain for several days, in spite of the help of potent analgesics such as tramadol. But I'm more or less back among the living (or the surviving), with a 4-inch scar in my belly.

They stapled me like an official document. Six staples went this week, the other six will be taken out on Monday, and I'll probably be able to walk around further than two blocks in a week or 10 days, if the pain will just ease off a little.

I'm just pushed ahead by the hope to be back in the studio as soon as possible. These 12 days of immobility have, at least, resulted in a wealth of ideas of photos I want to do, and the eternal anguish that, although I really have very good work and creation partners (models, if you wish), they're not enough in number. Geographic isolation will do that.

Boys don't make passes... and contest

Some time ago, a female deviant put up a lovely portrait of herself with the title "Boys don't make passes... at girls who wear glasses". My comment to her was "But men do...".

Glasses are one more way for women to be beautiful and attractive, so here are some of my latest favorite bespectacled portraits. I do wish, though, that other kinds of photos would also include glasses. Based on this, sometime in March I will be launching a photo competition having females and eyeglasses as the topic. Stay tuned.

Boys don't make passes...

Some time ago, a female deviant put up a lovely portrait of herself with the title "Boys don't make passes... at girls who wear glasses". My comment to her was "But men do...".

Glasses may have meant something else way back when I was young, life was in black and white and intelligence was frowned upon in women (and glasses somehow were related to intelligence rather than shortsightedness, something that I never understood, especially since I wear glasses since I was 9). But that is definitely over. Glasses are one more way of being beautiful and attractive for many women, so here are some of my latest favorite bespectacled portraits. I do wish, though, that other kinds of photos would also include glasses... maybe there's a contest there, somewhere.
